Dental Sedation, North York Dentist

What is Dental Sedation in North York?

Dental sedation is an umbrella term that refers to a variety of techniques used to make patients more comfortable during dental procedures. Our dentists determine the need for sedation on a case-by-case basis and can help determine if a dental sedation option is right for you.

At Sheppard Yorkland Dental in North York, we do everything we can to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental appointments. In addition to offering sedation options, we will work at your pace, take breaks when you need them, and provide calm reassurance as needed.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide - which is commonly known as laughing gas - is inhaled through the mouth and nose. This sedation method works to calm patients but allows them to remain awake and able to communicate. Nitrous oxide may also help to lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex and make time pass more quickly.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedatives are pills or liquids prescribed by your dentist. The sedation medication is taken orally prior to your dental appointment. Oral sedation leaves you awake for the procedure, but produces a calming effect to significantly relax you while you are having your treatment done.

IV Sedation

IV sedatives are administered directly into the bloodstream through the vein. This form of dental sedation is the deepest level without general anesthesia. Our team of dental professionals will attach you to a monitor so that the dentist can keep track of vital signs throughout the procedure.
